A Christmas Candy Killing

 

A Christmas Candy Killing is the first book in the Killer Chocolate series by Christine Romeril.   While I am not sure I would partake of the chocolates with poison names, I have a feeling I would change my mind if I entered Murder and Mayhem run by the twins in this story.  It was a charming book and was full of quirky characters and drama.  I look forward to reading more in the series.  I'm glad I picked up this book based on its title font reminding me of a Christmas Story.

What’s not to love about a bookstore and chocolate shop all in one place. Too bad it’s fictional but then I’m not sure I could eat chocolates named for poisons. The mystery and it’s characters reminded me of the Aurora Teagarden mysteries in the group meeting to discuss crimes. Jane seems like a motherly lady who’s a lot like Miss Marple. The small town atmosphere makes the suspects secrets all the more realistic and makes the discovery of the guilty party that much more difficult. The clues are unraveled well and are there in retrospect. I look forward to reading more in this series as they are published

A West Side Love Story

 A West Side Love Story is a retelling of the classic Shakespeare play, Romeo and Juliet.   This was a such a great read.  I loved all the drama and indecision that was felt by Mariana and Angelo.   Having to choose between their growing attraction for each other and their loyalty to family is tearing them both apart.  The generation-long dispute between the 2 families comes to a head during the San Antonio Mariachi Battle.  I loved how Priscilla Oliveras mixed the culture and traditions within a modern story.  The subtext about the dangers of gentrification and its unintended consequences was well-written without being an in-your-face lecture.  I appreciate that the story presented both sides with room for the reader to think about the topic on their own. If you are looking for a great romance with minimal steamy scenes this is a great read.

West Side Love Story by Priscilla Oliveras

an emotional story of forbidden romance

This book was a wonderful example of a retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The growth of the relationship between Mariana and Angelo amidst the strains of a decades long feud was full of emotion and stress. Both adept at managing their own and their family’s needs and struggles makes their burgeoning relationship that much more complicated. You cannot help but root for them to succeed. I also liked the details of the mariachi music and other aspects like the importance of family in their culture. I really appreciated the way the Spanish was woven into the prose and then translated. It was clever and flowed amazingly. If you are looking for a Feb romance read with some steamy scenes that centers around devotion to family while trying to make a forbidden romance work then this is a read for you

The Bloodthirsty Bee

The Bloodthirsty Bee is the 6th book in the Julie Cavallo series.  I love the quirky characters in this series and the setting in Provence is a fun and unique place to set mysteries.  The mystery is well written and I liked reading about the family dynamics both within Julie's family but the other characters as well.  If  you are looking for books based on characters and relationships this is a great cozy series you can find on Kindle Unlimited.

I really enjoy the Julie Cavallo mysteries and how well developed her relationships with her friends and family are. The mystery is well thought out with realistic rational behind the crimes and a thorough examination of motive and means I look forward to reading more in the series and to learning more about the primary characters

Wuthering Heights

 I had not previously read Wuthering Heights somehow.  I guess it wasn't on the list of classics we read in high school and I just never picked it up.  I read it this month as our book club selection.  I must admit I understand why it is a classic and I appreciate the depth of the writing and the storytelling.  It is amazing a woman wrote this is the 1800s and I understand why it was published under a pen name.  The characters are well developed and their are some very strong willed women in the story- something I imagine was rather out of the ordinary for the time.   That being said I disliked the characters immensely.  I did not like their personalities or their morals.   I am guessing this was supposed to be the reader's reaction and it is definitely achieved.   Bronte does a wonderful job of showing the difference in the classes in the era and the frivolousness of some of the wealthy.   Modern versions of "privilege" complaints should read the classics to see the true disparity and lack of ability to rise above one's class of birth.  

The descriptions of the moors and the setting surrounding Wuthering Heights is such that it is easy to visualize the sparseness and the despair the environment can cast on the characters.   Discussion questions raise the query as to whether the moors are themselves a character in the story.   They definitely play an important role for certain.   

The aspect of the story that surprised me the most relates to observations and comments about the story as I have heard through my lifetime.  Heathcliff and Catherine are portrayed in a manner that implies this novel is a romance.   Definitely a shock if that is the reader's expectation.  Also,  I have never seen the movie but in our discussions at book club it became apparent that the original Laurence Olivier  version their are major screenplay liberties taken and characters who play a large role excluded from the plot.  It sounds as though the movie is where the misconception of the romance story originates.   

This classic definitely uses old language and reading it on kindle has many advantages as you have the built in dictionary to look up words quickly.  All in all this was a good read and I am glad to have experienced another classic but won't be running out to read those over cozy mysteries in a big hurry.  

Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I had never read this classic before and I must admit that from hearing about the book and references over the years I would have thought it was a romance. Heathcliff and Catherine have been glamorized and romanticized in comments and definitely in cinema. Wow reading this book could not be a bigger shock to how not a romance story it really is. I truly cannot stomach any of the characters except Nelly, the narrator. The abhorrent behaviors of many of the characters make them unlikeable. That being said I totally understand why this is a classic and the level of complexity of the novel is quite apparent. Bronte obviously writes an amazing story to draw that level of emotions out of the reader even if it is a distaste versus liking the characters. Her level of descriptions of the moors and the environment definitely creating a setting of desolation and despair. I must say though that anyone who tells you this is a story of a love affair has only watched the movie for sure. A perfect dark read for the month of October.

Geekerella

 Geekerella by Ashley Poston was a surprise fun read for me.  I selected it to fulfill a retelling prompt and ended up enjoying it much more than I anticipated.  The storyline definitely mimics Cinderella even involving a pumpkin and sewing dresses.  No multi talented animals though.  The story does a wonderful job of showing the lows and highs of an underdog   You would have to be mean at your core to not cheer for Elle to get her goal fulfilled.   

There are several YA tropes in the book but rather than feeling contrived they do make sense.   Among them are the mistaken LGBTQ crush, the mean girls and the secret admirer.  The whole fangirl and Cosplay theme make for a great story.   If you are looking for a fun heart warming story you will enjoy this book.  It's an added bonus if you are into SciFi and Cons. 

There are several other books in this series that I am interested in reading down the road.  

 I liked this retelling of Cinderella mixed with the Sci Fi flair.  The Cosplay was An interesting plot line.  I wished there was A bit more depth to the relationships between Elle and her family.   There were glimpses of them starting to discuss emotions that quickly disappeared I would have liked that to have happened.  Also the ending felt a bit  rushed maybe I just was wanting more.  i did enjoy the book though.

Body in the Books

 This novella, Body in the Books is by Heather Huffman.   It's a wonderful new series set in St. Augustine, FL.  Nora Jones has inherited her estranged uncle, Walter's estate but there are plenty of unanswered questions that came with this gift.    As the story progresses Nora's group of friends become more and more like family and you cannot help but enjoy their relationships.  I thoroughly enjoy the story of Pru and her disorder which causes her to be affected by sound in an extraordinary way.  The mystery in the book was intriguing and extremely well written I enjoyed finding out what happened to Walter.  I look forward to reading the next book and seeing how the story evolves.  

     

Body in the Books by Heather Huffman
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

great new series set in a bookstore with several mysteries embedded in this cozy. Nora has to try to figure out why her Uncle whom she didn't know left her his bookstore and charming bungalow. as she learns more she creates a new family of charming friends. her most unique is her employee Pru who has a unique condition that makes her sensitive to sound. Nora comes to learn some of Uncle Walter's secrets but most of all to discover what a wonderful kind man he was.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

 I ended up reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney to meet several challenges on my list this year.  Obviously, it is not a typical read of mine.  Indirectly, I ended up covering a prompt about nostalgia too since this was a favorite series of my son throughout elementary and even middle school.  I think he might even be known to go back and reread them for fun even now.  I must say I also thoroughly enjoy the movies made based on the series which I had scene before ever reading this book.

Murder of a Sweet Old Lady

Murder of a Sweet Old Lady is the second book in the Scumble River series by Denise Swanson.   I read the initial book, Murder of a Small Town Honey in Dec 21.   I enjoyed this book as much as that one.  This installment continued to develop the characters and their relationships with one another.  I appreciate the fact Skye Denison has flaws to her character and that not everything is going perfectly in her life.  The most enjoyable part of this book for me is the fact it is set in IL and references many locations not far from my home.  I think it is always fun to read about places you are familiar with when reading books.  

This is a great cozy mystery that has a school setting for much of the action as Skye is a school psychologist.  This is a different setting than many of the series; many tend toward culinary or book based it seems.  In many ways this profession allows many readers to connect with Skye, particularly those who have been involved in their children's school settings.  It is easy to recognize many of the personality types in the book.  

 Anyone with family drama will appreciate the struggles Skye goes through while trying to determine what happened to her Grandmother. Family secrets fester both in her personal and professional life. Summer is not very relaxing when you’re trying to find a killer. A good second book in the series. Looking forward to reading more on the Scumble River crew

Death on the Nile

Death on the Nile  is a classic Hercule Poirot novel that I had not previously read.   This tome by Agatha Christie is being adapted to the screen in 2022 and I selected this as the the book to fit that prompt for several of my challenges.  I am excited to see the movie after having read the book which I found enjoyable as I usually do all of her books.

This is the first time I read this book by Agatha Christie. I enjoyed the level of complexity in the characters and the many red herrings this story included. The many characters interact in amazing ways and the false suspicions are well presented and believable. The twists and turns leave the reader guessing until the very end. The descriptions of Egypt and the pyramids are amazing and it is easy to visualize the scenery and monuments. The classic lives up to the expectations
