 Murder Mystery Book Club book #3 is Death Under the Stars. Set in Australia and focused on a book club, this series has cozy mysteries that tend to parallel Agatha Christie's books. They are enjoyable and cleverly written.

enjoyable cozy with lots of Christie references

This book has undertones of Christie’s Evil under the sun and mixes with some Hitchcock plot as well. The group dynamics of the murder mystery book club changed a bit in this installment. Now Alicia is involved with Det Jackson so there is the amateur connected with the pro trope. Also there is a bit of strain in the group dynamics and changes in member’s circumstances; all making for interesting twists. The book features lots of red herrings and twisty clues that make for a well written book. I look forward to continuing the series

Final Fondue

 This is the 3rd book in the 5 ingredient mystery series by Maya Corrigan.  This series is heavy on character relationships and that really adds to the appeal.   The main and recurring relationship is between Val Deniston and her grandfather.   This is a realistic representation of a relationship between a grown woman and her grandfather.  Particularly the aspects where he is still trying to tell her how to live her life even if he means well.   The book is rife with misunderstandings and people jumping to conclusions; particularly when past events are clouding their judgments.  

Final Fondue by Maya Corrigan
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This is a cleverly written cozy with several red herrings that keep the reader guessing until the end about the guilty party. I liked the references to Hitchcock movies that are interwoven into the storyline. The characters in the story are all dealing with things in their pasts that are well conceived and the characters' reactions feel very appropriate and authentic.

A Murder between the Pages

 

A Murder between the Pages by Amy Lillard continues on the antics of the ladies of the Friday Night book Club and their abilities to test Arlo's patience.  I enjoy the growing details of the relationship between these women and Arlo as well as that of Arlo and Chloe's friendship.   The awkward romantic triangle between Arlo, Mads, and Sam, while a bit cliché, is an interesting dynamic that overlays the mysteries as well.  This book depicts life in small town Sugar Springs, Mississippi which I imagine is quite like living in a small town in many areas of the US.  The ladies of the book club use the beauty parlor as the source for town gossip to help them investigate both the 50 year old mystery as well as the current murder that both involved Lillyfield Manor and the wealthy Whitney family.  There is definitely a sense of reverence for the wealthy Whitney family whether they deserve it or not and there is a sense of mystery that surrounds their life as it differs from the rest of the town's residents.  These details add to the storyline and the mystery. The mystery was a bit predictable as I formulated my suspicions about halfway through the story, but it was still enjoyable to see how the story played out.   

The mystery ends with a cliff hanger that I am curious to learn more about in the next book in the series.  

A Murder Between the Pages by Amy Lillard
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This second book in the series does a wonderful job of incorporating small town Mississippi into the plot. The antics of the Friday Night Book Club add a wonderful dimension to the mysteries. The structure of this story was well written and I enjoyed the correlations the book club made between the real life story in their town with that in the novel written by a local raised author. The realism of their actions is a bit stretched as I am sure they would be in much more trouble in real life for their interference but it still adds a fun tone to the story.

The Jasmine Moon Murder

 The Jasmine Moon Murder is perfect for tea lovers and mystery lovers alike.  This series is set in Theodosia's tea shop in Charleston, South Carolina.   I thoroughly enjoy the Southern charm and hospitality that appears throughout this series.  I am particularly intrigued by it right now as my son is considering attending college in South Carolina starting next year and I realized just how much of that region we could explore while visiting him.   

This is the 5th book in the series about Theodosia Browning and her tea shop.  The mysteries are well constructed and the atmosphere is well staged both in terms of Southern ambiance and the actual setting of the mysterious death in a cemetery. Theo investigates the death of  Jasper Davis, at the request of her  beau, Jory.   Uncle Jasper is a wonderful family member and a successful scientist involved in the development of a new angioplasty device.  The family and his company are at the center of the story.   The actual culprit was a surprise which is a nice turn of events since often the guilty party is predictable in cozy mysteries.  

This is a great book for those looking for an atmospheric mystery set in the South full of southern genteel and traditions, including a fox hunt.  I'm excited to read more in the series to learn more about different teas and to see how Theodosia and Jory's relationship develops.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great cozy for anyone looking for Southern charm and great descriptions of tea and tea shops. The relationship between Theodosia and Jory is strengthened when she helps him figure out who’s behind the death of a family member. There were plenty of twists and the ending was a surprise

Cancans, Croissants and Caskets

Cancans, Croissants and Caskets is Mary McHugh's 3rd book in the Happy Hoofers series.  This time the ladies are scheduled to dance about a river boat on the Seine.  Their first scheduled show for the week is for Bastille Day.  Everyone aboard is excited for the party and the fireworks.  Unfortunately, sinister activities are afoot and the cruise ends on a bad note and the ladies find themselves embroiled in an investigation in a foreign country again.  

This installment is told from the perspective of Jan,  She is an actress who is single and finds herself with several suitors during their trip.   Again I enjoyed how McHugh combines the mystery details with wonderful flavors of the local setting.  It is easy to envision the sites in Paris as well as the culture and atmosphere.  The mystery was solvable for me before the reveal, but the motive was not clear until the actual ending.  

This is another series to read if you are looking to travel through reading.  Next stop for these ladies is Rio.  

Cancans, Croissants, and Caskets by Mary McHugh
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoy this cozy series and especially the fact each book has a different member of the ensemble cast as the narrator. This time Jan, the actress, narrates the adventure in Paris as the Happy Hoofers perform on a River boat on the Seine. Again murder follows them and they meet many interesting character. The dynamic of the group’s friendships continues to develop as does the wonderful description of the places they visit in Paris. The mystery is well developed and the motive is logical. I did figure out the guilty party before it was revealed. The other reason I did not give this a 5 star is there are timeline inconsistencies- Jan’s initial visit to the club is repeatedly referred to as the night before when in fact it was 2 and 3 nights prior. Not a judge deal but a bit of an annoyance
I look forward to reading about the ladies adventures in Rio

Death in an English Cottage

 Death in an English Cottage is the 2nd book in the Murder on Location series by Sara Rosett.  Anglophiles and particularly lovers of Jane Austen will like this series.  This book has plenty of not very pleasant characters and some plot lines that aren't all positive and roses.  These combine to make the cozy feel authentic even when set in a foreign location. Rosett's descriptions of Nether Woodsmor makes it easy to visualize a story that could be shown on BBC with all their other mysteries.   The plot is full of false leads which lead to a surprise reveal at the ending.  I look forward to reading more of the series which I already have in my TBR pile.

Death in an English Cottage by Sara Rosett

This series is fun as it focuses on movie making particularly the location scouting aspect of it. The descriptions of the English countryside and the Jane Austen connections transport the reader to another place and era. The mystery itself is complex with sub stories that help provide red herrings. I really like this series and feel as though Anglophiles and Jane Austen lovers will really like it as well

Death on the Danube

 I decided to read Death on the Danube this month because I needed to complete a book for Book Voyage Challenge that was set in Russia or Eastern Europe.  I planned to read Midnight in Chernobyl but realized I would not complete it in time.  I am still progressing on that book but it will go into April.  

This is the first book in the  Travel Can be Murder series by  Jennifer S. Alderson.  I really enjoyed the book and the wonderful descriptions of Budapest that were included in the story.  The mystery was well constructed and the characters were realistic.  I look forward to reading more in the series, particularly since it is in Kindle Unlimited.

This is a great series if you like to travel, either IRL or vicariously through your reading.  

 

Death on the Danube: A New Year's Murder in Budapest by Jennifer S. Alderson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Great cozy mystery especially for readers who enjoy reading about foreign locations. The wonderful descriptions of Budapest reinforces my desire to visit there. The structure of the mystery was well done and although the clues pointing to the guilty party were present it wasn’t immediately obvious. It is easy to have emotional responses to the characters, both warmth for the Fab Five and the Hendersons. Jess and Tom and Helen are quite easy to dislike as is Carl. I look forward to reading about more of Lana’s adventures

A Vacation of Mischief (A Cozy Mystery Tribe Anthology, #4)

 This is the 2nd Anthology of the Cozy Tribe that I have read.  I enjoyed reading the short novellas that introduced several new characters to me as well as revisiting some of the series I read in the previous anthology,  A Flock of an Alibi  The book is available through Kindle Unlimited and is an enjoyable quick read.  Since it is an anthology the stories are short reads which makes this a perfect book for reading while at appointments, in car pool lines etc.  These stories all center around a vacation theme.  

Flint and Steal is my first read of Patty Joy.  The story introduced me to Kelly Green who is working as a camp host in a State Park in Missouri for the summer.  Here she hooks up with Sheriff Duncan from her hometown to help resolve the mysterious disappearances of items from the campsites of his extended family during their reunion.  This book is a wonderful combination of eclectic characters and a glimpse at Romani culture.  It definitely intrigues me to read more in the series about .

The series I had previously read was by Verena DeLuca.  This story, Axure and the Case of the Rogue Ride,  is part of a paranormal series with dragons and their humans they have connections with.  Azure and her human, Tona, visit a new amusement park outside San Antonio, TX.  Strange occurrences require investigating while Tona is on a day long date at the park's soft opening.  

Brittany E Brinegar introduced me to her character, Becky Robinson, from her Hollywood Whodunit series in the story Hitchcock's Perfect Murder. Becky is on vacation with her high school ex and his extended family and finds herself solving a mystery.  The book mimics the classic Murder on the Orient Express.  I definitely enjoyed this character and her personality and would like to read the series. 

Rune Stroud's story, Beaches and Bloody Hands introduced me to Simon, the talking Raven who is the familiar of Autumn.  While both are on vacation in Myrtle Beach, they assist in locating a missing elderly woman.  Simon is a cheeky character that adds a bit of levity that makes the series enjoyable.  I generally am not a huge paranormal reader but this series intrigues me.   

Kathryn Mykel's Murder Glazed Over introduced me to Cole and Katherine who are on vacation Alice Springs, WA when they discover a murder victim.  They end up helping solve the mystery during their Valentines' getaway.  This series seems to be one based up their travels and the mysteries they encounter

Sue Hollowell's Pedicures and Perpetrators has us following Tilly and Fiona to a spa for a relaxing weekend of treatments.  Unfortunately their tranquil trip is interrupted by a murder.  They need to clear their names so they can return to their everyday lives in Belle Harbor.  Their strong friendship engaged me and I look forward to reading more about them in the Belle Harbor series.  

All in all this anthology has definitely added books to my TBR list.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid

 I ended up reading Diary of a Wimpy Kid by Jeff Kinney to meet several challenges on my list this year.  Obviously, it is not a typical read of mine.  Indirectly, I ended up covering a prompt about nostalgia too since this was a favorite series of my son throughout elementary and even middle school.  I think he might even be known to go back and reread them for fun even now.  I must say I also thoroughly enjoy the movies made based on the series which I had scene before ever reading this book.

Cloud Cuckoo Land

 My book club selected Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr as our Feb book.  I truly had no idea what to expect and was worried this would be an over hyped book.   I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the book.   I only gave it 4 stars rather than 5 only because I felt there could have been a bit more resolution with the why behind Konstance's storyline as well as a little more resolution with some items in Seymour's story.  These are minor items in the scheme of this novel.  There are multiple interweaving storylines that span many years with a common plot element in each of the time eras that connects each of the stories.    The level of detail and story structure is very well done and although this is a book over 600 pages long it reads very quickly and is hard to put down once you have begun.

Cloud Cuckoo Land by Anthony Doerr
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

This book does a wonderful job of intertwining 4 stories set at distinct times in history but all having a common thread. Doerr does a wonderful job of combining description with plot. There is not a ton of action such as a thriller would have but there is plenty of occurrences in the characters' lives. One thing I enjoyed was the characters personalities were described and you got a feel for who they were, but you never really had a huge description of their appearance. Each character had a defining characteristic that was made clear, but there wasn't necessarily a he had brown hair, she had blond level of detail which made the reader's imagination take the center stage on how they envisioned the characters. I appreciated the way the storylines were completed but I would have liked a bit of the why behind some of the stories, particularly Konstance's-this is why it is a 4 and not a 5 star book for me. The book had a definite layered approach to it, where different readers seeking different levels of entertainment and satisfaction would all be appeased. The storyline is well written and complete, but then there is definitely philosophical and deeper meaning in the stories. Additionally, lovers of history or ancient texts would be able to read and enjoy these features and research more about those aspects if desired. All in all a very good book

Clear the Reading Piles

 Once again I am doing several challenges to help clear the ever growing TBR pile.  For a full list of challenges I found for 2022 see this blog entry.

Some of the TBR challenges refer to physical books I own and others have to do with clearing the list of Want to Read and Library borrows that I am always seeming to add to as well.  

First up are 2 hosted by Bev on her MyReadersBlock blog.  

Mount TBR-   #MountTBR2022  books you already own before 1/1/21

The Rules:
*Once you choose your challenge level, you are locked in for at least that many books. You are welcome to voyage further and conquer taller mountains after your commitment is met. 

*Books must be owned by you prior to January 1, 2022

*Audiobooks and E-books may count provided they are yours prior to January 1. ARCs are also fine.

~Once you choose your challenge level you are locked in for at least that many books. If you find you are on a mountain-climbing roll and want to tackle a taller mountain, then you are welcome to upgrade. All books counted for lower mountains carry over towards the new peak.

This challenge is only for books you do not own. They may be borrowed from the library, a friend, found on a free e-book site (like Project Gutenberg), or anywhere else that allows you to temporarily "checkout" the book. Also--unlike Mount TBR--there is no date limit on your wish list. If you see a book that strikes your fancy after January 1 and want to grab it from the library, etc. then go for it.

  This is a straightforward challenge to just track books that are on your to read list- whether or not you actually own them.  Only requirement is that it must be published before 2021 and be on your list at the beginning of the challenge.
