A Scone of Contention (Key West Food Critic Mystery, #11) by Lucy Burdette takes a slight deviation from her norm. Instead of being set in Key West, most of this book is set in Scotland. But readers need not despair there is still plenty of recipe/foodies talk in this book as well. As the title implies this book is all about scones and their different recipes. Included in this book as well are some other Scottish courses. Other than haggis I must admit I wasn't aware of many of those dishes mentioned. I was more familiar with the descriptions Burdetter included of the Old Course at St Andrews golf course. These details were amongst many she gave about Scotland and the countryside and culture. I felt I learned quite a bit about the 'thin veil' between the worlds of the living and the dead. The Scottish beliefs that surround this relationship were quite interesting to read about. Additionally, the scenes and descriptions using the VR gear to experience history were quite vivid and while intriguing, I appreciated the cautionary tale of being aware of unintended consequences when messing with modern technology.
The mystery as always was well constructed and kept me guessing as to the guilty party. Even at the reveal, it was a bit surprising on the "why" I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
A Scone of Contention by Lucy Burdette
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
This book made a divergence from the normal Key West setting and instead focused on a trip to Scotland. Hayley and Nathan brought Miss Gloria along for an unconventional honeymoon visit to see his sister. His mom then joined in so it was a big family affair complete with a murder. Envy and competition amongst old friends was present as they toured around Scotland and made for an awkward trip. I enjoyed how Burdette mixed Scottish history and scenery into the story. It was a nice change to have a book with these endearing chara characters set somewhere besides Key West. The foodies will really enjoy reading about different Scottish fare and scones in particular
