Final reads of 2022

 Just a few books that finished out my reading for 2022.  

Scone Cold Dead by Kaitlyn Dunnett
My rating: 3 of 5 stars

A good cozy for readers interested in dance, particularly Scottish dancing. At times the MC, Liss, can be a bit annoying and self centered. If I hadn’t read a future book in the series and seen how she grows as a character, I might give up on this series. The mystery itself is structured well although I did guess the guilty party quite a while before it was revealed. I recommend giving the series a try and sticking it out if you like it but don’t love it as I know it does get stronger as the series progresses

Diamonds & Donuts: A Jessica James Cozy Mystery by Jennifer Joy
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

loved the tres amigas antics

This cozy was nice bc there was no murder in it which made it a bit more plausible since Banos is a small Ecuadorian town. It is pleasant to have the characters and their interactions be the center of the story. In this particular case the focus is on the 70+ yr old ladies and their escapades. I also appreciated the fact not everything came out perfect but still a positive ending.
The local culture and environment is showcased in a nice balance to the mystery.

A Disguise to Die For by Diane Vallere
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Love the details of the costume shop that dominate this story. Margo is a character that really displays a vulnerability and a healthy dose of self doubt. It is satisfying to watch her grow and change as the mystery/book progresses. The mystery is very well written with plenty of suspicion and characters to go around. I look forward to reading more in this series and by the author

Color Me Murder by Krista Davis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I think I have found a new favorite series. Something about these characters just made me love them from the start. Florrie has a heart of gold and is a perceptive amateur detective. While the book has many of the standard tropes of a cozy including conflict with the professional detective this one just appealed to me and felt somewhat unique. I really look forward to reading more of the series.

The Tiger Came to the Mountains by Silvia Moreno-Garcia

fascinating short story

Moreno Garcia has a masterful ability with words. I look forward to reading longer works of hers
