Legend of Sleepy Hollow

A classic I had previously never read.  I was familiar with the story from general knowledge but definitely didn’t know all the details.  I had also forgotten just how much Dutch influence there was in the early settlement of New York.  Of course that shouldn’t be hard to remember if you know the song about Ild New York was once New Amsterdam.   Plus I did live off Amsterdam Ave on the Upper West Side back in the day.   Shows how easily we just accept different language influences in our country which is in reality a good sign of our melting pot ways.

Overall I liked the book although I did struggle to get into a rhythm due to the old language it is written in.  Not being a fan of flowing descriptions this is a tough read for me.

The Legend of Sleepy HollowThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I listened to the audiobook for this and enjoyed the narrator’s ability to put inflections in a way you could distinguish the different characters. I do think the first portion of the story may have been easier to follow had I been reading a physical copy due to all the details and different characters. The language of the book definitely reinforces the fact it is a classic written in the early 1800s. This was the version of a horror book I could tolerate. Not sure I’m ready for the primetime variety yet.
