Borrowed Crime

Borrowed Crime is the 3rd book in the Bookmobile Cat series by Laurie Cass.  The antics of Eddie the cat certainly are front and center along with his relationship with Minnie.   The story highlights what a positive impact animals can have on our lives.  Additionally, the services of the bookmobile show what a welcome and necessary outlet they provide in more rural areas.   I  have fond memories of bookmobiles as a child and I love that this book shows the fun it instills in the younger generation.

As for the mystery it is well constructed and I wasn't 100% sure on who the guilty party was which is unusual for me.  I normally figure out the criminal before a cozy is finished.   I appreciate that Minnie is a "normal" person just trying to do her job and enjoy her daily life.  The drama that surrounds her relationship with her boss, Stephen, adds a great layer to the stories.  I recommend this series for those looking for an engaging cozy.

enjoyable book especially for cat lovers. i like the fact the Minnie feels like an authentic person. Her relationship with her Aunt Frances, her cat, Eddie, and her coworkers create an all around character who feels like someone you would want to be friends with. This series is best read in order as their are recurring characters that progress through the stories

Up to No Gouda

Up to No Gouda, by Linda Reilly, is like a warm comfort food cozy.  The descriptions of the Grilled Cheese sandwiches are wonderful and really add to the storyline.   The relationship between Carly and her employees feels authentic and precarious at times.  The struggle she is having to reconnect with her high school friend, Gina, as well as the others in the small town she grew up in feels realistic and something many can relate to-  think the Bon Jovi song Who Says You Can't Go Home.  I am really looking forward to reading the next book in this series and hopefully many more to come.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I really enjoyed the foundation of this novel and the delicious descriptions of grilled cheese sandwiches are mouth watering. The mystery definitely had me questioning the guilt of some of the parties and kept me guessing until the bitter end. I liked the vulnerability of Carly and the development of her relationships with her employees and her HS friend. I appreciated the romantic interest is not a primary storyline but rather a side note. Made for a nice change from many cozies.

Sugar and Vice

Sugar and Vice is the second book in the series by Eve Calder.   The characters are what really make this series for me.  The close relationship between Kate and Maxi is so engaging and heart warming.  You can really believe they are close friends.   Any dog lover or baked goods lover will enjoy this series.

The Longest Yard Sale

The Longest Yard Sale is the second Sarah Winston Garage Sale mystery by Sherry Harris.  It has been a bit of time since I read a Sarah Winston book as I have been reading the Sea Glass Saloon series by Ms Harris of late.  I definitely feel as though it is apparent the Garage Sale series was earlier in her writing career as her characters seem more full depth in the Sea Glass series but I still really enjoy Sarah and her friendships.  I do like the setting and background of the military lifestyle in this series and can relate to many of the base locations and military protocols having grown up a Navy dependent.

The mystery is well written and has multiple layers involved.   There are definitely red herrings and false leads/suspicions in the story line.  The garage sale premise and the development of Sarah's business makes for an interesting aspect of the series as well.

The Longest Yard SaleThe Longest Yard Sale by Sherry Harris
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Interesting plot lines that especially speak to those that have been in / were dependents in the military. Many of the subtleties to the plot and the characters are better understood if you are familiar with that lifestyle That doesn't mean if you aren't familiar you shouldn't read the series though. The premise of setting it around a small town with friends being falsely accused of a crime is consistent with most cozy mysteries. Sarah is an interesting character struggling to find her way after a recent separation. It is interesting to see how she is approaching this and developing her business. They mystery is certainly complex and keeps the reader guessing until the end.

The Big Chili

This is the first book in the Undercover Dish series by Julia Buckley.  I didn't know what to expect when I selected the Big Chili and was surprised to find it set in IL.   As I have mentioned previously I always enjoy reading books set in locales I am familiar with and this was no exception.  I really enjoyed the development of Lilah's character.   She is a strong determined woman but also shows real vulnerability in the face of danger.  I look forward to reading more about her and especially about the development of her catering career.  The premise behind her business and how she becomes involved in a murder is quite a unique twist and showed lots of creativity.  I look forward to reading more in the series.

The Big ChiliThe Big Chili by Julia Buckley

Love the fact the main character Lilah is doing whatever it takes to pursue her dream career. The authenticity of the characters reactions to different people's actions and behaviors feels very real. The guilty party is well concealed but can be figured out by paying attention to all the clues as the story is read. Looking forward to reading more about Lilah and her budding catering career

Peonies and Poison

I am finding myself drawn to reading the Diana Flowers Mystery series by Ruby Loren.   Each time I finish another book I seem to want to start the next in the series.  It is definitely a quirky series with the conspiracy theme running through the books. Peonies and Poison actually ended up with a surprise prompt fulfillment due to the conspiracy Diana and Fergus found themselves in the middle of in this installment.   If you are looking for a fun series with unlikely friendships this is an enjoyable one to check out.

Nearly Dead in Iowa

Nearly Dead in Iowa is a new series for me by Wendy Byrne that I spotted at the library.  It seemed like a good choice for a book to meet my Iowa destination requirement for the year.   I must say the book started out dragging for me, I just didn't really like the main character all that much for some reason.  As the book progressed I did enjoy it more and would not be opposed to reading future books in the series although it would not be at the top of the list of books to read as I am catching up on different series.

fun new series to me. i selected for a usa reading prompt since it would cover Iowa. I was pleasantly surprised by the book. Although at times it felt a bit bumpy it was a good read. The escapades Izzy found herself in with the older ladies were often funny and all the different personalities shown through. I enjoyed the book and will most likely try another Izzy Book soon

Murder at Beechwood

Murder at Beechwood is the 3rd book in the series by Alyssa Maxwell that centers around Newport, RI in the Gilded era.  The series gives the reader a peek at the lifestyle of the lifestyle of the extremely wealthy American families in late 1890s.    Emma Cross is a cousin of the Vanderbilt family living and as such she interacts with the who's who of the American industrialists.  While being a lesser Vanderbilt relation, she has the opportunity to live independently and without some of the restrictions and expectations placed upon the debutante daughters of the Vanderbilts and their peers.   Her lineage does afford her the opportunity to visit the famous homes of Newport though;  sometimes as a social call and other times as a lifestyle reporter for the local paper.  The books focus on the crimes she finds herself at the center of and uniquely positioned to obtain insight the police would otherwise not uncover.  Although the books can be read alone, it is more enjoyable to read them in order as there are references to past adventures and existing relationships.

This particular book focuses on the Astor family estate and the summer season kickoff Mary Astor hosts for the 400 Hundred.  Emma finds herself in attendance in her role as the society writer.  But her new friendship with Grace Wilson, due to cousin Niely's courtship of the young lady, provides her inside access to the social events.  This access is important to the investigation of several crimes that appear to be interrelated but not definitively.   Maxwell does a wonderful job of unraveling the details and keeping the mystery engaging.   There is a nice balance of description about the gilded era and the plot lines.  Emma and her household are very likeable characters and Emma's strong will is made apparent through the dialogue, both external and inner.  I enjoy reading about the era but am certainly glad to live in the modern world with all the choices and opportunities provided to both genders.

If you are looking for a historical cozy mystery this is a great series to try.  In many ways it is the American version of the Rhys Bowen series.

Murder at BeechwoodMurder at Beechwood by Alyssa Maxwell
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Enjoyable book set amongst a wealthy society. its fun to read about some of the famous industrialist families we learn of in history books. Maxwell does a wonderful job of creating characters both likeable and easily despised. Emma Cross is a wonderful antagonist and her relationships with her cousins and her childhood friends are quite engaging. The mystery itself is well written and the different subplots fit well together and are resolved appropriately.

A Call for Kelp

A Call for Kelp is the 4th Seaside Cafe book by Bree Baker.   Set in the Outer Banks of NC the books make you dream of a beach vacation.  It is so easy to visualize the beach, surf and boardwalk scenes as described in the book.  The mystery that surrounds the death of Mitzi Calgon while she is in town helping to promote the documentary being filmed by Everly Swan's Aunts in an effort to raise awareness of the plight of bees.  In addition to the murder of Mitzi there appears to be something Det. Grady Hays is not sharing with Everly.  As the story progresses it feels more and more like there are secrets being kept from Everly which causes her to be unsure of her relationships with those around her.  I look forward to reading about life in Charm, NC and to see how the small town relationships evolve.

A Murder Yule Regret

I must have had a subconscious decision to read Christmas in July books.  I ended up reading 3 different books set at the holidays this past month.  A Murder Yule Regret is the 7th book in the Bread Shop series by Winnie Archer.  Ivy Culpepper finds herself working 2 different parties hosted by starlets while helping her boss, Olaya, at Yeast of Eden.  In addition to the well constructed mystery with multiple side crimes including blackmail and stalking, there are developing relationships mixed within the story.  I appreciate the author discussing the positive aspects of the relationships and how Ivy values the support she and Miguel have for each other.  These cozies always seem to have a nice balance of highlighting the positives of human nature along with the dark side that leads to murders.

If you are looking for a mystery with strong relationships and delicious bread and appetizer recipes/descriptions then look no further.

mouth watering bread and appetizers play a huge role in this story as there are multiple catering gigs at the center of this Hollywood starlet centric story. the small town charm of Santa Sofia is interrupted at the holidays when 2 starlets throw holiday parties. unfortunately neither had murder on their agendas when they made their guest lists. the story is well developed with lots of surprises and a fairly shocking outcome

Poinsettias and the Perfect Crime

Poinsettias and the Perfect Crime is book #3 Diana Flowers Floriculture Mysteries  This series is a lot of fun to see the different dynamics amongst the characters.  This installment is full of family drama and residual high school age drama.   Mixed in among all this is the murder of Bill Wrexton and the disappearance of a valuable diamond.  The plot is a mix of light hearted fun directed at Diana's friend, Fergus and his conspiracy theories and a bit like a government spy novel.   Diana has drama in the form of her ex boyfriend appearing on the scene as well as a high school rivalry resurfacing.   Meanwhile it is the holiday season and her floral business is booming and expanding.  This is always an interesting sub story and learning experience.  I look forward to reading more of this series.  If you want a light hearted and somewhat humorous cozy this is a great series to try.

Strawberried Alive

Strawberried Alive is the 14th Cupcake Mystery by Jenn McKinlay.  I always enjoy reading her different series but this one is fun because it is an ensemble cast with a core group of friends who have been close since high school.  It is always fun to see relationships last and grow and to get glimpses of their history together in the storyline.   The movie quote game is always a fun aside in this series as well.  In this book, the family is growing and it is fun to see how the new baby was woven into the story as well.

The mystery was an interesting premise and showed the traditionally united Old Town store owners being divided into factions.  It was intriguing to see how the success of the Fairytale Cupcake business was misconstrued by some of the fellow business owners and how jealously is a part of all aspects of life especially when things are tough.   I enjoyed the business logic that was built in from Tate's guidance and the creative financial solution that was presented, it added depth and authenticity to the storyline.  I look forward to reading more about these group in future installments and to watch their relationships continue to grow.

always enjoyable to read aboubriningt the Fairytale Cupcake ladies. This book does not disappoint as there is some foul play going on in Old Town and the ladies find themselves embroiled in it again. This time their fellow shop owners aren't so tolerant and accuse them of bringing blight to the area. The mystery takes the reader through the different shops in the Old Town district and we meet some shady characters as well. The whodunit is somewhat predictable but not totally obvious. All in all an enjoyable read

The Perfect Guests

The Perfect Guests is a thriller by Emma Rous.  It is a well thought out multiple timeline book that felt an awful lot like the classic Agatha Christie novels.  There are plenty of twists and turns and the ending certainly left your jaw open.  The characters take the reader through a wide range of emotions including dislike, fear, and pity.   The pieces are all linked up a the conclusion of the book and felt like they were well presented rather than forced upon the storyline.  If you like books with a variety of characters including those that are not very likeable then this book is a good choice for you.

Encyclopedia Brown Boy Detective

This was a blast from the past for me.  I listened to the audiobook to satisfy a requirement for a book for entire family.   It felt like a fun opportunity to go back and read some of the initial mystery series I read way back when.  Even then, I was an avid mystery reader- Encyclopedia Brown, Nancy Drew, Bobbsey Twins, Boxcar Children and Trixie Belden were all found in my reading pile during elementary school.  I still have copies of the original 54 Nancy Drew books.  Obviously I was hooked on the mystery and problem solving at a young age.
